Korean Skin Care Routine For Oily Skin

Oily skin is one of the most common skin concerns, but don’t worry we are always here to help! We break down the skincare routine with a curated selection of products to help you keep the oily skin under control.

How to tell if you have oily skin?

If you notice that your skin is prone to breakouts and acne or you feel your skin is shiny, greasy and moist when you touch it, it tells you that you have signs of oily problems. Moreover, enlarged pores are also concerned as a clear signal of oily skin. Don’t worry, read more below and find the effective solutions for your skin.

Do you know the other causes of oily skin?

One of the reasons is simply genetics. We are born with either dry skin or oily skin or even both combined together. Apart from that, there are other reasons for oily areas in your skin below.

When you wash and scrub your skin too harsh with cleansers or exfoliators, you may simultaneously strip your skin out of moisture and cause your glands to overproduce excessive oil. Then, your skin may appear shiny with enlarged pores, probably cause breakouts and blackheads. Make sure you do not over-wash or over-exfoliate your face.

Another root of oily skin can be your eating diet. One of London’s première aesthetic doctors, Dr David Jack said that “eating a diet high in antioxidants and low in animal products has been shown to reduce inflammation and sebum production” (sebum which is responsible for keeping the skin hydrated and healthy mainly decides the “oiliness level”). So, the advice is to keep a balanced diet with a lower intake of sugars and more plant-based products.

Are there any advantages of oily skin type?

Do you know that you're actually lucky to have oily skin? You may be struggling with some skin problems due to oily conditions now, but it will be more valuable when you get older. Having more oils in your skin could help you to slow down the sign of ageing problems such as fine lines or wrinkles.

Here are some tips dermatologists recommend to help control oily skin

Do cleanse your face every morning and evening, but don't scrub your skin as scrubbing can irritate your skin. Also use a mild, gentle cleanser, many people believe that using a harsh cleanser for oily skin can help dry out the skin. However, using a cleanser that is too harsh can irritate your skin and trigger increased oil production.

Choose the products are oil free so they won’t clog your pores or cause acne. Although you have oily skin, it's still important to apply moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated, so don't forget to apply moisturiser daily and do wear sunscreen with SPF30 or higher to protect the skin.

How to build your own morning and night routine?

Don’t rush your morning skincare routine, start slowly and simply to have the best skin condition all day long, especially when you apply makeup afterwards. When possible, pause at 5 minute intervals before applying the next steps of your morning skincare routine.

CLEANSING AND TONING

First things first, the routine starts with gentle cleansing like Cosrx Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser, to remove oily residue and non-absorbed skincare from overnight to prevent clogged pores. After cleansing, tapping some soft and dewy toner over the face will balance the skin condition and also control the sebum secretion. If you are looking for a toner that helps restore moisture and keep the perfect pH level balance of your skin after cleansing, Isntree Green Tea Fresh toner is one.

TREATMENTS (ESSENCE, SERUM, OR AMPOULE)

In the next step, your oily skin craves for some special treatments. It’s time for a serum or ampoule to melt in your skin to deliver either antioxidants and/or nature-derived ingredents which help with water-oil balance. The SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule is a prime example of a simplistic yet highly effective ampoule which offers a broad range of benefits for oily skin types; including skin-soothing and hydrating benefits, balancing sebum levels, reducing the inflammation and redness of breakouts (which is common among oily skin types), and reducing the appearance of dark spots.

MOISTURISER

Nowadays, there are plenty of moisturiser options for oily skin types which are both lightweight and do not encourge excessive sebum production. At Glam Touch, we bring you the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Cream and Centella Soothing Cream to ultimately tackle water imbalance among oily skin types. The SKIN1004 Madgascar Centella Cream provides a non-greasy lotion-like texture suitbale for oily skin types thoughout most seasons of the year. Whereas the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Soothing Cream is a gel-type moisturiser which seeps quickly into skin to quench inner skin thirst to provide prolonged moisture replenishment which doesn't put pores under stress.

SUN PROTECTION

For oily skin, cleanser, toner, serum, a light moisturiser, followed by a sunscreen are enough for day time to keep the skin protected with minimal shine. Always remember to wear sunscreen to protect your skin from damaging UV rays, for a young and healthy look. With an oily skin condition, you may be afraid of sunscreen due to greasy and heavy feeling. But, we’re here to prove you that lightweight, non-shiny and non-sticky sun creams really do exist for your oily and acne-prone skin. One to name is the Beauty Of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics (sun cream).

STEPS 1 & 2: DOUBLE CLEANSING

Night time is when your skin condtion should be restored and relaxed, removing dirt and oil on the skin’s surface which has accumilated throughout the day. Different from what we do in the morning, the night routine starts with the double-cleansing technique, an oil-based cleanser first to remove your makeup; such as the SKIN1004 Madacascar Centella Light Cleasning Oil which is easy to emulsify and doesn't leave behind residue. Or if you prefer a cleasning balm, then we highly recommend the Beauty of Joseon Radiance Cleansing Balm for it's soft-scoop texture which brightens skin with nurtient-dense rice water extracts and grain ferments and is essential oil free.

STEP 3: TONER

You may want to add a mildly acidic toner to your routine such as the SKIN1004 Madacascar Centella Toning Toner or Isntree Clear Skin BHA Toner. Both contains mild Hydroxy Acids to help sweep away excess sebum, any remaining traces of impurities and refine skin texture to keep the skin clear and balanced to deter breakouts.

STEP 4: TREATMENTS

This step is to slather on a concentrated but watery essence, serum or ampoule to treat your skin concern such as inner skin dehydration, acne or hyper-pigmentation which are skin concerns often associated with oily skin. The SOME BY MI AHA.BHA.PHA 30 Days Miracle Serum works wonders for oily skin. This powerful serum infused with 10,000ppm tea tree leaf water and 14.5% centella extract helps soothe and moisturize while minimizing pores. Alternatively, you may wish to continue to you use the same treament products which you used in your morning routine as consistency is key to effeciency.

If you're looking for a light-weight serum with anti-wrinkle effects that is still suitable for oily skin, Banobagi Rejuvenating Vital Serum won't disappoint you. This premium Dermo-cosmetic holds Edelweiss Callus Culture Extract which provides a burst of hydration which melts into skin fast almost without a trace.

STEP 5: MOISTURISER

Although you have oily skin, it doesn't mean you don't need to moisturise. All skin types need a good moisturiser to lock in moisture and all the goodness from the previous steps while keeping the skin moisturised and strengthening skin barrier.

But since you have oily skin, you can opt for a light-weight moisturiser or gel-type moisturiser. Dear, Klairs - Midnight Blue Calming Cream is a dream for oily skin. This pretty blue calming cream contains the star ingredient, Guaiazulene which carries powerful skin calming abilities, and Centella Asiatica, which helps hydrate and relieve redness.

Don’t you think that it’s enough to control oily skin? Yes and no. Occasionally, ideally once per week, your oily skin - just like any other skin type - will require exfolation and a treatment wash-off mask to maintain a healthy glow and improve skin textural issues. Facial scrubs tend to contain dense nourishing ingredients and are therefore better for dry skin types. Whereas peeling gels are the more appropriate choice of exfolator for oily skin as they don't leave behind a film of oils or buttery ingredients. The Beauty of Joseon Apricot Blossom Peeling Gel helps promote smoother, glowing skin whilst overcoming enlarged pores.

And for the mask addict, we have the perfect wash-off mask for you! The Axis-y Mugwort Pore Clarifying Wash-Off Pack provides elements of pore care, brightening care, and skin-calming functionalities all-in-one. What more could your oily skin need!?
