Double-Cleansing, The Secret to Healthier, Clearer Skin
We’re all big fans of Korean Skincare here, so you have heard and learnt about the Korean Skincare Routine, and how facial cleansing is important, but what about the ‘double cleansing’ technique? Is it necessary? Double-cleansing is a two-step process that involves cleansing skin twice. The first cleanse is to start with an oil-based cleanser (cleansing oil or balm) to remove makeup, sebum, then follow with a water-based cleanser such as a foam or gel to deep clean the pores and treat blemishes. If you wear foundation and make-up, or daily sunscreen which are ofter difficult to remove, I do recommend double cleansing.

Step 1: Use an oil-based cleanser

The first step is to start with an oil-based cleanser which comes in either liquid oil, balm or cream, and it should be applied with clean hands on to dry skin. The basic concept of this cleansing method is to remove makeup, dirt, bacteria from the skin. So even if you have oily skin, don’t be afraid of applying oil to your face. Oil attracts oil, so it will dissolve the oil that has hardened with impurities and found itself stuck in your pores (bad oil).
The key is to be gentle, no harsh rubbing and luke warm water- never too hot or too cold.
The whole purpose of properly cleansing your skin is to simply dissolve makeup or remove sunscreen residue. A cleansing oil or oil-rich balm will do this well without stripping the skin and damaging it’s protective barrier. They’re ideal for all skin types; removing excess sebum for the breakout-prone, and conditioning dry areas.

Step 2: Water-based Cleanser

Following the oil cleanser, use a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining residue and impurities. Your second cleanse is also the time to exfoliate. If you have acne or prone skin choose a product with actives such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid or niacinamide that help keep acne at bay.
Or if you struggle with dry and sensitive skin, choose a foam cleanser which is gentle and with a low pH such as Cosrx low pH good morning gel cleanser to help gently exfoliate without stripping your skin.

Since double cleansing honestly I have definitely seen a change in my skin. Reducing redness, it’s a lot more hydrated and more radiant.
So now you understand how important the cleansing step is, it’s not just about removing dirt – it also helps prep skin to absorb products and skincare actives applied after cleansing, otherwise that expensive anti-ageing serum or spot treatment is just sitting on top of a layer of old and dead skin cells.
